Travel Insurance in Gran Canaria
If you live in Gran Canaria, travel insurance should match the journeys you actually make: holidays abroad, family visits, business trips, inter-island travel or journeys to mainland Spain. Before comparing premiums, we look at destination, maximum trip duration, medical assistance, repatriation, cancellation, baggage and whether you need a single-trip policy or annual cover.
- Medical assistance: limits and conditions vary by destination
- Repatriation: check where the policy would return you
- Single-trip or annual: based on frequency and trip length
- Local office: Playa del Inglés
Request a travel insurance quote
Tell us the destination, travel dates, who is travelling with you and whether the trip is already booked. If you want cancellation cover, we also need the approximate trip cost. With those details we can identify which type of policy is worth comparing before asking for further documents.

From the form to a useful comparison
Complete the form
Tell us the destination, departure and return dates, number of travellers and whether the trip is already booked. If you want cancellation cover, add the approximate cost. For annual insurance, we also need to know how long your longest trip is likely to be.
We review your travel plans
Michael Dittkrist will contact you, normally the same day or the next working day. We look at how often you travel, your destinations, trip duration, reason for travel, relevant medical circumstances and any cover you may already have through another policy, bank account or card.
Compare the options
We present several proposals and compare medical assistance, repatriation, maximum trip duration, cancellation, baggage, deductibles and territorial scope. That allows you to choose based on how you travel rather than on the starting premium alone.

Living in Gran Canaria changes how a travel policy should be read
Many travel policies use your normal place of residence to define what counts as a trip and where cover applies. For someone living in Gran Canaria, travelling to another country is different from travelling to Madrid or another Canary Island. Some contracts also include domestic travel, while others concentrate certain benefits on journeys outside Spain. That distinction should be checked before you buy.
Your place of residence also matters for repatriation. If you become ill or injured while away and need medical transport, the policy may provide for return to your place of residence, transfer to a suitable medical facility or another arrangement depending on the circumstances. If you live in Gran Canaria, confirm exactly which destination the contract provides for and what happens to travelling companions.
Imagine a couple in Maspalomas who spend several weeks each year visiting relatives in different European countries. An annual policy may be convenient, but the key issue is not only the number of trips. They also need to check the maximum number of consecutive days per journey, whether medical limits are suitable for their usual destinations and how repatriation works if one of them has to return early.
One trip or all your trips during the year
A single-trip policy is designed for specific dates and a specific destination. An annual policy can cover several journeys during a twelve-month period without arranging a new contract each time. Annual cover can be useful if you travel frequently, but it does not mean every stay is covered without limit: policies usually set a maximum duration for each trip.
Maximum trip duration can matter more than the premium
Two annual policies may look similar while allowing very different trip lengths. If your longest journey exceeds the maximum stated by the plan, cover may end before you return or you may need a different solution. That is why we ask about your longest planned trip before comparing prices.
Travel within Spain and between the islands
A trip to Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura or mainland Spain is still domestic travel. Not every travel policy includes the same benefits for journeys within Spain. If you use flights or ferries regularly, it is worth checking cancellation, delay, baggage and assistance cover alongside whatever medical protection you already have through other arrangements.
If you travel several times a year, we compare the cost and conditions of insuring each trip separately with an annual policy. The choice should be based on frequency, trip length, destinations and required benefits, not simply on which option looks cheaper at the start.
In an emergency, contacting the assistance service first can be crucial
Travel insurance normally operates through a 24-hour assistance service. In many situations, the procedure requires you to contact that service before arranging certain treatment, transport or expenses. If you make arrangements yourself and submit a bill afterwards, reimbursement may be limited or disputed if the cost was not authorised under the policy.
Save the assistance number and policy number on your phone before you travel. In a serious emergency, medical care comes first, but where possible the insurer should know about the case from the beginning so it can coordinate the hospital, payment guarantees, transport or repatriation according to the policy terms.
After the immediate emergency, we can help with the administrative side: checking documents, reporting incidents, clarifying which invoices should be submitted and following up with the insurer. The important point is not to discover the procedure for the first time when you are already abroad and need urgent help.
Six points worth comparing in travel insurance
Two policies with a similar premium can respond very differently when something goes wrong. Compare territorial scope, maximum trip duration, repatriation, cancellation, medical conditions and additional benefits such as baggage, documents and liability while travelling.
Territorial scope
Where the policy applies
- Cover may be limited to Spain, Europe or worldwide depending on the plan
- Domestic journeys are not treated the same way by every policy
- Your declared residence helps determine what the policy considers travel abroad
Duration
How many days each trip may last
- Annual policies usually set a maximum duration for each trip
- The limit varies significantly between providers
- Always compare the plan with the longest journey you expect to make
Repatriation
Where the return transport is intended to take you
- Check whether transport is to your place of residence or another suitable medical destination
- Return of travelling companions may be a separate benefit
- Limits and conditions depend on the specific product
Cancellation
When costs are reimbursed if you cannot travel
- Cancellation may be optional or provided as a separate section of cover
- The insured amount should reflect the actual cost of the trip
- The policy defines which reasons for cancellation are covered
Health
How the policy treats known medical conditions and planned treatment
- Pre-existing medical conditions are treated differently from one plan to another
- Planned treatment that is the reason for travel may be subject to specific rules or exclusions
- Answer any medical questions from the insurer fully and accurately
While travelling
Baggage, documents, delays and liability
- Baggage and valuables often have limits per item and per trip
- Delays, lost documents or missed connections may have separate limits
- Personal liability while travelling depends on the benefits included
The exact scope of each benefit depends on the insurer’s policy wording. This comparison helps identify differences, but the issued policy is always the document that determines benefits, limits, deductibles, exclusions and the assistance procedure.
For an initial comparison we need the destination, trip duration, number of travellers and whether the journey is already booked. If you want cancellation cover, we also need the cost. For an annual policy, the longest trip you expect to make is important because maximum days per journey can vary widely between plans.
For the other products handled from Playa del Inglés, see our Gran Canaria insurance overview. If you already have travel cover, send us the certificate and policy terms and we can review them before suggesting anything new.
The information on this page is general and current as of October 2026. Medical assistance, repatriation, cancellation and health-related conditions vary by insurer and product. The issued policy, its terms and the rules applying to the specific journey always take precedence.
When it is worth reviewing travel cover you already have
It is common to have some travel protection through a credit card, bank account, health policy or assistance membership. That does not automatically mean it replaces a full travel policy. Check who is insured, which residence the cover assumes, the maximum trip duration and the amount of medical assistance available.
Also check whether the trip must be paid with a particular card, whether cancellation is included, whether all travelling companions are covered and whether repatriation is based on your current residence. Older cover may still be valid while no longer matching the way you travel today from Gran Canaria.
We do not recommend buying a second policy without first reviewing what you already have. Two policies may overlap in some areas while leaving gaps in others. A second opinion helps identify that overlap, check the limits and decide whether existing cover should be supplemented or replaced.
If you want us to review existing cover, send the certificate and policy wording. We can check how the contract defines a trip, which territories it covers, the maximum duration, medical assistance, repatriation, cancellation and any activation requirements. Only then do we compare alternatives if they are actually needed.
Acceptance, pricing and benefits depend on the insurer, destination, traveller age, trip duration, trip cost and selected benefits. This page explains general comparison criteria and does not constitute a contractual offer.
Frequently asked questions about travel insurance in Gran Canaria
I already have travel cover through a card or bank account. Is that enough?
It depends on the terms. Some card-based cover only applies if the trip was paid with that card, while other arrangements limit the number of days per journey or cover only the account holder. Check medical assistance, repatriation, cancellation, baggage, deductibles and residence requirements. If you send us the wording, we can review it before recommending another policy.
Relatives from abroad are coming to visit me. Does my policy cover them?
A policy arranged for residents in Spain normally protects the insured people who travel from their place of residence; it does not automatically insure relatives arriving from another country. Visitor products may be available. First check what cover they already have in their country of residence and whether it remains valid for the full stay.
Does travel insurance cover flights and ferries between the islands?
It depends on the plan. Some policies include domestic travel and others concentrate certain benefits on international journeys. For flights or ferries within the Canary Islands, check cancellation, delay and baggage benefits. Medical assistance on a domestic trip should also be considered alongside the health cover you already have.
I am travelling for planned medical treatment. Is that covered?
Treatment that is the main reason for the journey is often subject to specific rules and may fall outside ordinary travel-assistance cover. Before travelling for planned surgery or treatment, clarify the costs and authorisations with your health insurer. The travel policy may still cover unrelated incidents, depending on its terms.
I have to cancel because a close relative is seriously ill. Does cancellation cover apply?
It may be covered if the policy includes cancellation and defines the serious illness of that relative as an insured reason. The definition of family member, required level of severity and evidence can vary. Check the list of covered causes before you buy, not only after something has happened.
The trip is already booked. Can I still add cancellation cover?
It depends on the product and how long ago the trip was booked. Some plans require cancellation cover to be purchased within a certain period after booking; others apply waiting periods or different conditions. Tell us the booking date and trip cost so we can check which options can still insure that journey.
I am taking my own car on the ferry. Is the vehicle covered by travel insurance?
No. Travel insurance protects the people travelling and the benefits selected for the journey; the car remains insured under its motor policy. Before taking the car away, check that the motor insurance is valid at the destination and what roadside assistance applies. Travel insurance may cover certain journey disruptions, but it does not replace the vehicle’s insurance.
