Pet Insurance in Gran Canaria

Living in Gran Canaria with a dog or cat involves two different insurance needs: protecting yourself against damage the animal may cause to other people, and deciding how much protection you want for veterinary costs. Policies do not all work in the same way. We compare liability limits, reimbursement levels, deductibles, the animal’s age and medical history, exclusions and travel cover before you choose a policy.

Request a pet insurance quote

For dogs and cats, whether you need third-party liability, veterinary cover or both. Tell us the basic details about your pet and the protection you are looking for; we review the documentation and the insurer’s specific conditions afterwards.

We compare pet insurance from these providers

How it works

From the form to a useful comparison

Complete the form

Tell us whether you have a dog or cat, the breed, date of birth, microchip status and the type of protection you are looking for. For veterinary cover, the medical history and any existing policy are also important.

We review your pet and your routine

Michael Dittkrist will contact you, normally the same day or the next working day. We look at the animal’s health and age, how often you travel, who looks after the pet when you are away and what third-party liability protection you need. That helps us rule out options that do not fit.

Compare the options

We present proposals from different insurers and compare liability limits, deductibles, choice of vet, reimbursement percentage, exclusions, waiting periods and territorial cover. The aim is to understand what each policy actually covers before you take it out.

Dog owner liability: what you should check

Spain’s Animal Welfare Law 7/2023 provides for dog owners to maintain third-party liability insurance for damage caused by the dog, with the detailed scope subject to the applicable rules. Meeting the legal requirement does not mean every policy is equivalent. You still need to compare the indemnity limit, who is insured, exclusions and the geographical scope of cover.

It also matters who may be looking after the dog. If a relative, neighbour or pet sitter takes the dog out and an incident occurs, the response depends on how the policy defines the insured persons. Some policies cover only the owner and members of the household; others may extend protection to people caring for the dog without payment. Check this before assuming that any occasional carer is automatically covered.

Imagine a friend is walking your dog in Maspalomas and the dog bites another dog. In addition to dealing with the immediate incident and recording the details of everyone involved, you will need to know whether that carer falls within the policy’s definition of an insured person. That is why we compare not only the liability limit, but also who is protected and which situations are excluded.

Moving to Gran Canaria with a dog or cat

If you arrive in Gran Canaria with a pet from another country, keep the travel requirements separate from the insurance cover. For movements within the European Union, dogs and cats normally need a microchip, an EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination. Additional requirements can apply when travelling from a non-EU country, so the documentation should be checked before the journey.

Microchip, pet passport and rabies vaccination

For EU travel, the microchip must identify the animal correctly and the rabies vaccination must meet the validity requirements. After a first rabies vaccination there can be a waiting period before travel is allowed. The airline separately decides whether the animal may travel in the cabin or must travel in the hold according to its own weight, carrier and transport rules.

Veterinary insurance does not replace travel requirements

A veterinary policy may cover consultations, diagnostic tests, surgery or selected treatments depending on the product, but it does not replace the health documentation required for travel. Likewise, having the pet passport and vaccinations in order does not mean veterinary costs outside Spain are automatically covered. The territorial scope of the policy must be checked separately.

If you already have insurance from another country, check before moving whether it remains valid when you become resident in Spain and for how long. Once you are living in the Canary Islands, also check local pet-registration requirements with your vet, including the relevant regional register. Do not cancel existing cover until you know in writing whether it continues and, if replacing it, until the new policy’s start date is confirmed.

If you travel and your pet stays on the island

When you are away, the animal needs to remain with a person or establishment able to look after it properly. Alongside the welfare obligations, there is an insurance question: can the carer authorise veterinary treatment, are they covered if the dog causes damage while in their care, and what documents will they need to contact the insurer?

Before travelling, leave the carer the policy number, the insurer’s contact details, the pet passport or health record and clear authority to act in an emergency. If the veterinary policy works on a reimbursement basis, it is also useful to know who can pay the bill upfront and which invoices or reports the insurer will require afterwards.

If you take the pet outside Spain, check the countries covered and the maximum duration of travel allowed. Liability and veterinary expenses can have different geographical limits under the same policy. We review that point before the trip so you do not assume that every part of the cover automatically continues abroad.

Six points worth comparing in pet insurance

Two policies with a similar price can respond very differently. With pet insurance, pay particular attention to who is insured, the liability limit, freedom to choose a vet, the reimbursement percentage, geographical scope and the information the insurer asks for before accepting the animal.

What the insurer wants to know before accepting the pet

The exact cover depends on the insurer and the individual policy terms. A comparison helps identify the differences; the issued policy is always the document that determines what is covered, the limits and exclusions.

For an initial comparison we need the species, breed, age, identification details, the cover you want and whether there are known health problems. For liability cover we also consider who usually looks after the animal and whether it travels with you. The insurer may later ask for additional veterinary documentation.

For a broader overview, see our insurance services in Gran Canaria. You can also read our general guide to pet insurance for dogs and cats in Spain.

The information on this page is general and current as of October 2026. Legal, health and travel requirements can change and should be checked before travelling. The policy, the insurer’s terms and the rules applicable to the individual case always take precedence.

When it is worth reviewing a pet insurance policy you already have

A pet policy may stop fitting as the animal gets older, its health changes or it travels more often. You may also have strong liability cover but limited veterinary protection, or the opposite. Reviewing the contract helps identify those gaps before a claim or a major veterinary bill occurs.

Compare the annual limit, reimbursement percentage, deductibles, waiting periods, age restrictions, treatment of pre-existing conditions and territorial scope. If the policy is older, also check who is named as insured and whether it covers the people who actually look after the animal today.

We do not recommend cancelling the existing policy until the new insurer has accepted the animal and you know the exact start date of the new cover. This matters especially with veterinary insurance because a condition diagnosed during a gap in cover could later be treated as pre-existing under a new application.

If you want a second opinion, send us the current policy and the latest renewal notice. We review what it actually covers, which limits apply and what would change with an alternative. That allows you to decide with both contracts in front of you rather than replacing a policy on price alone.

Acceptance, pricing and benefits depend on the insurer, the animal’s age and characteristics and the information declared in the application. This page explains general comparison criteria and does not constitute a contractual offer.

Frequently asked questions about pet insurance in Gran Canaria

A friend is walking my dog and it causes damage. Who is responsible?

It depends on how the policy defines the insured persons. Some policies include members of the household and certain carers; others are more restrictive. If another person regularly walks or looks after your dog, check this beforehand. After an incident, record the details of those involved and notify the insurer without promising payment or accepting liability on your own.

The specific compulsory liability requirement for dog owners does not apply to cats in the same way. That does not mean damage caused by a cat is irrelevant. Check whether liability is already included in another household policy or whether separate protection is appropriate. For the cat itself, veterinary expenses are usually the main insurance concern.

First assist the injured person, exchange contact details, identify witnesses and keep photographs or any other relevant evidence. Notify the insurer within the period stated in the policy and avoid making a written promise of compensation before the insurer has assessed the case. We can help you prepare the claim notification.

Not necessarily. Damage to rented premises can be covered, limited or excluded depending on the contract. Scratched doors, floors or similar damage may be treated differently from an accidental third-party claim. If your tenancy agreement requires specific insurance for the dog, send us that clause so we can check that the policy meets it.

It depends on the territorial scope and the maximum travel period stated in the policy. Liability and veterinary expenses can have different limits. Before booking, also check the destination country’s entry requirements and your pet’s health documentation. For a longer stay, review whether the cover remains suitable for the entire period.

Pre-existing conditions are often excluded or subject to specific conditions, but the exact definition varies between insurers. Declare the medical history accurately and provide the information requested. Disclosing the condition allows you to know from the outset which part of the risk the insurer is actually accepting.

Yes. Many policies set a maximum entry age or change conditions as the pet gets older. An animal already insured may retain certain benefits even when a new policy would no longer accept a new application at that age. Do not cancel an existing contract until the alternative has been accepted and its start date is confirmed.
