How Much Does Private Health Insurance in Mallorca Cost?
Premiums depend on your age, whether you want Spain-only or worldwide cover, your chosen excess, and whether you’re insuring just yourself or a family. As a rough guide: A single person in their mid-forties typically pays between €90 and €180 per month. A family of four can expect to pay between €280 and €450 per month
Most policies include a health declaration. Pre-existing conditions such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes don’t automatically mean you’ll be refused – many insurers will offer a loading or an adjusted policy. We’ll walk you through your options.

Common Questions From Expats
Do I need Spanish health insurance in addition to my existing health cover?
Anyone registered as a resident in Spain needs appropriate healthcare cover locally, either through the Spanish public healthcare system (Seguridad Social) or through private health insurance. Travel health insurance from another country is generally not sufficient for permanent residents. We can advise you on the most suitable solution for your circumstances.
What if I need treatment before my policy starts?
In the event of an emergency before your policy start date, Spain’s public emergency healthcare services will generally provide treatment. We recommend arranging your insurance to begin as close as possible to your arrival in Mallorca to avoid any gaps in cover.
Can I switch from my current public health insurance system?
Yes. When you move your main residence to Spain and register as a resident, your healthcare arrangements in your previous country may change. Depending on your personal circumstances, you may be entitled to access the Spanish public healthcare system or may need private health insurance. We can guide you through the available options and help you arrange suitable cover in Spain.
Are pre-existing medical conditions an automatic reason for exclusion?
Pre-existing medical conditions are assessed during the application process. Depending on the condition, this may result in an additional premium, a temporary exclusion for certain treatments, or a recommendation for an alternative policy. A blanket exclusion is relatively uncommon and depends on the insurer and the individual circumstances.
How does access to private hospitals in Mallorca work?
With private health insurance, you can access the hospitals, clinics and specialists included in your policy’s approved medical network. In Mallorca, Quirónsalud Palmaplanas, Clínica Juaneda and Clínica Rotger are among the main private healthcare providers, with English-speaking medical professionals often available.
What documents do I need to take out a policy?
To apply, we will usually need your passport or identity document, your NIE or proof of residency status if available, details of any additional people to be insured, and information about your medical history. We guide you through the application process in English and help prepare the necessary documentation.
