Which level of car insurance is right for you?
In Spain, third party motor insurance (Seguro a Terceros) is compulsory for every registered vehicle. Beyond this, the right cover depends on the vehicle’s value, age and use. We compare the three common levels for you:
Compulsory cover
Third Party (Terceros)
- Required by law for every registered vehicle in Spain.
- Covers injury and property damage caused to third parties.
- Can usually be combined with roadside assistance and legal protection.
Popular for used cars
Extended Third Party (Terceros Ampliado)
- Third party cover plus theft, fire and glass damage.
- Good value for older vehicles.
- Suitable when comprehensive cover is no longer cost effective.
Maximum protection
Fully Comprehensive (Todo Riesgo)
- Can include damage to your own vehicle.
- Available with or without an excess.
- Recommended for new cars, high value vehicles and leased vehicles.
When comparing policies, we look beyond price at the benefits that matter in everyday island life: roadside assistance from kilometre zero, vehicle recovery, a replacement vehicle, driver and passenger protection, and dependable claims service. Depending on your profile, we also include specialist providers such as Qualitas Auto, part of Britain’s Admiral Group. Before each renewal, we review your policy again so the cover and price remain competitive.
How much does car insurance cost in Mallorca?
Premiums depend on the vehicle, the driver’s age and experience, claims free years and the selected cover. The following figures are illustrative ranges only and are not guaranteed. We prepare your individual quote after comparing several insurers:
Compact car, driver aged 45, claims free
Third party cover with glass protection and roadside assistance · Example range approximately €250 to €400 per year
New SUV, driver aged 40
Fully comprehensive cover with an excess · Example range approximately €500 to €900 per year
Drivers who can provide evidence of claims free years from another country may qualify for discounts with many insurers. The chosen excess can also significantly affect the premium. We compare the options for you.
Bringing a foreign vehicle to Mallorca? We can help with registration
Many of our clients bring a vehicle from another country to Mallorca. As a resident, you will usually need to register it with Spanish number plates. We explain the steps in English, arrange continuous insurance from day one and clarify matters such as foreign driving licences and recognition of your previous claims free history with the insurer.
Frequently asked questions
What car insurance is compulsory in Mallorca?
In Spain, third party motor insurance (Seguro a Terceros) is compulsory for every registered vehicle. You can extend this protection with extended third party cover (Terceros Ampliado), including theft, fire and glass damage, or fully comprehensive cover (Todo Riesgo), with or without an excess.
Can I register my foreign car in Mallorca?
Yes. Residents in Mallorca will usually need to register their vehicle with Spanish number plates. We guide you through the process, arrange suitable insurance from day one and explain the required steps in English.
Is my foreign driving licence recognised in Spain?
Foreign driving licences can be recognised in Spain, but the rules depend on the issuing country and your residence status. Residents may have registration or exchange obligations, and many insurers accept valid foreign licences. We clarify what applies in your situation.
Can I transfer my claims free history from another country?
Many Spanish insurers recognise documented claims free years from a previous insurer abroad and may offer corresponding discounts. You will need confirmation from your previous insurer. We request terms from several providers for you.
How much does car insurance cost in Mallorca?
Premiums depend on the vehicle, the driver’s age and experience, the region and the required cover. As a general guide, third party cover for a car often starts at a few hundred euros per year, while fully comprehensive cover can cost considerably more depending on the vehicle’s value and the chosen excess. We prepare a specific comparison free of charge.

This is exactly where we can help. If you need to make a claim, contact us and we will communicate with the insurer, the repairer and, where necessary, the other party in Spanish, while keeping you updated in English.
