“I started out at AXA in Manchester underwriting fleet business, then spent years in compliance for an international telecoms company. That background is why I read the small print before I recommend anything: and why I would rather tell you a policy is wrong for you than sell it.”

We have 3 policies with C1, two for car insurance (which was more competitive on both counts than our previous provider.) and house insurance. All policies in English. Great service from Will at C1

What does private health insurance cost in Lanzarote?
The premium depends on your age when you take the policy out, whether you want cover in Spain only or worldwide, whether you accept an excess, and how many people are on the policy. As a rough orientation, a single person in their mid-forties usually pays somewhere between €90 and €180 a month, and a family of four between €280 and €450. Those are ranges from the plans we place, not quotes: your own figure comes out of the application.
Most plans ask health questions. Conditions such as high blood pressure or diabetes rarely mean an outright refusal: more often they lead to a loading on the premium, a time-limited exclusion, or a different plan being the better route. We go through the questions with you in English before anything is submitted, so there are no surprises later.
Single, mid-40s
Spain-only cover, moderate excess · roughly €90 to €180 per month
Family of four, parents late 30s
Spain-only cover, outpatient and hospital · roughly €280 to €450 per month
What the island treats, and what gets referred to Gran Canaria
This is the part that makes health cover on Lanzarote different from health cover on the mainland, and it is the clause people miss when they buy a policy online. Lanzarote has good general care, private consultations and diagnostics. Some specialist treatment is not carried out on the island at all and is referred to Gran Canaria or Tenerife, occasionally to the mainland.
Whether that referral is covered, and whether the flight and a night’s accommodation for you and one companion are covered with it, varies from insurer to insurer. Some plans include it as standard, some as an add-on, some not at all. We check this clause on every plan we recommend to a client living on the island, and we tell you which of the three you are looking at before you sign.
Where you can be treated on Lanzarote
C1 Broker is not tied to any single provider, so the medical directory you get depends on the insurer you choose. These are the facilities our clients on the island use most, alongside the San Roque group’s Centro Asistencial in Arrecife and Clínica Jorgani. Which of them your plan includes is something we confirm for you in writing before the policy starts.

Health cover across the seven municipalities
Our clients live right across Lanzarote, and where you live changes what a policy is worth in practice. Around Tías, Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca there are private practices within a short drive and English is widely spoken in them. In Arrecife you have both the private centre and the public hospital on your doorstep. From Teguise, San Bartolomé, Tinajo, Yaiza and especially Haría the journey to a specialist is longer, which makes the size of the insurer’s local directory matter more than the headline premium.
The same applies to the smaller places. We advise clients in Tahíche, Guatiza, Arrieta, Punta Mujeres and Órzola in the north, in La Santa, Tinajo and La Vegueta on the west coast, and in Femés, El Golfo and Playa Quemada in the south. None of them has a private practice on the doorstep, so the distance to the nearest one is part of what we look at when we compare plans for you.
We know which insurers have a thin directory on the island and which do not. That is the difference between a policy that looks good on paper and one that works when you actually need an appointment.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need private health insurance if I live in Lanzarote?
It depends on your status. If you work in Spain and pay social security contributions, you are covered by the public system. If you are not contributing, for example because you are retired, self-sufficient or newly arrived, you normally need your own cover. UK state pensioners can often register an S1 form instead. We look at your situation first and tell you which of the three routes applies to you before we quote anything.
Does private cover replace the public hospital in Arrecife?
No, it works alongside it. Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife is the island’s public hospital and handles emergencies for everyone. A private policy gives you shorter waiting times for consultations, scans and planned treatment, plus access to private facilities such as Hospiten Lanzarote in Puerto del Carmen and Centro Médico Parque in Arrecife.
What happens if I need a specialist who is not based on the island?
Some specialist treatment is not available on Lanzarote and is referred to Gran Canaria or Tenerife. This is the point most people overlook when they compare policies online: whether the plan covers the referral, and whether travel and accommodation for you and a companion are included. We check this clause on every policy we recommend for island clients.
Is there an age limit for taking out private health insurance in Spain?
Most Spanish insurers accept new customers up to an entry age of between 65 and 70. A few have higher limits or dedicated senior plans, and terms differ noticeably between them. We know which insurers are still open at which age, so an application over 60 does not have to end in a refusal.
How are pre-existing conditions treated?
You declare them on the application and the answer has to be accurate. Depending on the condition, an insurer may apply a premium loading, exclude that condition for a set period, or point you towards a different plan. An outright refusal is less common than people expect. We go through the medical questions with you in English before anything is submitted.
Do I need a policy without co-payment for a visa or residency application?
Applications such as the non-lucrative visa generally require full cover with an insurer authorised in Spain, with no co-payments and no waiting periods. The exact wording is set by the consulate or office handling your case and it does change. We confirm the current requirement and issue the certificate in the form your caseworker expects.
Will I be able to see an English-speaking doctor?
In the tourist areas of Lanzarote many private practices have English-speaking staff, and the larger insurers publish their medical directory so you can check before you register with a practice. Coverage is good around Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca and thinner in the inland municipalities. We go through the directory for your area with you rather than leaving you to guess.
